If you are planning to set up a tropical fish tank and are reluctant to go with the ever so common neon tetras and guppies, why not try some cichlids? The cichlid family contains roughly 2,000 species and some of them are known to do fine even in aquariums handled by beginner aquarists. You can for instance try the charming and colourful Kribensis cichlid, Pelvicachromis pulcher. This is a fairly small cichlid that does not require a big aquarium, but unlike most of the dwarf cichlids it is not very sensitive to soluble waste. The male can grow up to 10 cm in length while the females stay a bit smaller. The native home for this sturdy little cichlid is the Niger River delta in West Africa. It is adapted to a life in shallow rivers with plenty of aquatic plants and will therefore appreciate a planted aquarium with lots of hiding spots. The Kribensis cichlid will claim a territory and defend it, especially during the breeding period, but the territory is typically very small and therefore not a problem in the aquarium. The other fish will soon learn to stay away. If you for give your Kribensis cichlids a small cave in the aquarium, they will most likely be satisfied with guarding only the cave and leave the rest of the aquarium alone during the breeding period.
