Phalaenopsis orchids are often referred to as Moth orchids in English, since the flowers of certain species within this genus look a bit similar to flying moths. The name Phalaenopsis means Phalaen-like, and Phalaena is the name of a genus containing large moths. When it comes to orchids care, you can find a lot of Phalaenopsis species, hybrids and cultivars that does not require an excessive amount of pampering to do fine in a normal home or office. If you want too keep an orchid where the flowers can reach a size of 10 cm in diameter you can for instance go for the Moon orchid (Phalaenopsis amabilis). This orchid is one of the three national flowers of Indonesia and can bloom for a very long period of time when provided with the right conditions. If you want to provide this species with ideal Phalaenopsis orchid care, you must start by using a proper medium. Check the medium from the store; sometimes these orchids are sold anchored to an unsuitable medium that does not drain fast enough. Use really coarse bark mix suitable for orchids or let the plant grow clinging to something just like it would do in the wild. The Moon orchid should never be forced to stand with its roots in a soggy medium because this will sooner or later lead to root rot, which is very dangerous for the entire plant.
